Paragliding

Chamonix is one of Europe's best places to try paragliding, and tandem flights with a qualified instructor require no experience. The standard flight launches from Planpraz — the midpoint of the Brévent cable car — and soars down the length of the valley with an uninterrupted view of Mont Blanc on one side and the Aiguilles Rouges on the other. On a good day you can stay airborne for 20 minutes, landing in a meadow on the valley floor.

Tandem flights are available from several operators in Chamonix, bookable directly from the town. Prices are in the region of €80–120. The season runs from late spring through autumn — the best conditions are typically from June to September. For those who want to go further, Chamonix also has a paragliding school offering full certification courses over several days.

A story
Chamonix is one of the world's premier paragliding locations partly because the thermals generated by the cold glacier air meeting the valley floor create predictable, reliable lift patterns that instructors can explain and exploit. The standard tandem flight launches from Planpraz (2,000m) above the town and lands in the valley — about 10 to 15 minutes of sustained alpine views.
