Le Brévent

At 2,526 metres, Le Brévent is the highest point on the west side of the Chamonix valley and offers the classic face-on view of Mont Blanc. A two-stage cable car from the town centre (Planpraz at 2,000 metres, then Brévent summit) takes you there in about 15 minutes. The panorama from the top is exceptional — Mont Blanc and the entire granite spine of the massif fill the eastern horizon, while to the west you look out across the Aiguilles Rouges nature reserve and the lower valleys.

In summer, Brévent is the start or end point for several sections of the Tour du Mont Blanc long-distance trail, and a hub for day hikes into the Aiguilles Rouges. There is a summit restaurant. The skiing on Brévent is part of the Chamonix ski area and, along with the neighbouring Flégère sector, forms the most versatile terrain in the valley for intermediate and advanced skiers.

A story
Le Brévent offers the best view of Mont Blanc available without actually being on the mountain. The summit sits directly across the valley, putting you at roughly eye level with the great north face. Horace-Bénédict de Saussure, who offered a prize for the first ascent of Mont Blanc in 1760, made the first recorded ascent of Brévent in 1760 partly to study the mountain from a safe distance.
