Courchevel Altiport

The Courchevel Altiport is one of the most spectacular and notorious airfields in the world — a 525-metre strip carved into the mountainside above Courchevel 1850 with a runway that visibly slopes uphill. It featured memorably in the opening sequence of Tomorrow Never Dies, and during the winter season it is used by helicopters and small private jets ferrying the wealthy into the resort.

Even if you have no intention of arriving by air, the altiport is worth a short walk up from the village. There is a small terrace where you can watch the take-offs and landings, and on a clear day the views down the valley and across to the Vanoise massif are excellent. Sunset light here is among the best photo opportunities in the resort.

A story
The runway is built into the side of the mountain at an 18.5 percent gradient, which means aircraft take off going downhill and land going uphill. There is no go-around: once you commit to landing you are committed. Most commercial pilots are not qualified to use it.
