In winter, the answer is skiing. Courchevel is the western anchor of the Trois Vallées, the largest linked ski area in the world. The terrain ranges from gentle blues through the trees above 1550 to the steep Combe de la Saulire and the famous Grand Couloir off the Saulire summit. Cross-country trails, snow-shoeing routes, dog-sledding, and ice-driving courses fill in the gaps.
Out of season, the Vanoise National Park to the east is the great walking destination, with day hikes from Pralognan and the higher trails to spots like the Lacs Merlet. Closer to the resort, the Olympic ski jumps at Le Praz can be visited in summer, and the spectacular Courchevel Altiport is worth a walk in any season for the views and the take-offs. Rainy days lend themselves to Aquamotion, Europe's largest alpine water complex.
