Montée de la Grande Côte is one of the classic climbs through the slopes of Croix-Rousse, the old silk-workers' district above central Lyon. The street rises steeply past old houses, small shops, stairways and viewpoints, making the city's vertical geography impossible to ignore.
Walk it uphill if you have the legs, downhill if you want the easier version. Either way, it gives you a better feel for Lyon than a flat circuit of monuments: this is the city of traboules, workshops, terraces and sudden views over the Saône and Rhône.
