Valence has the compact old town and solid Romanesque architecture of a city that mattered once and knows it. The cathedral is the principal sight, but the old quarter surrounding it rewards slow wandering, and the position on the Rhône gives the city an outlook that opens dramatically to the Ardèche hills across the water.
