Place de la Myrpe

The most atmospheric square in the old town, with a Cyrano statue and the market

The Place de la Myrpe is the smaller and more characterful of Bergerac's two main old-town squares — a triangular space of paved cobbles, lime trees, half-timbered houses, and a stone statue of Cyrano de Bergerac in the middle. The statue, by Émilien Cabuchet, has been here since the 1970s and is the older of the town's two Cyranos.

The square is the home of the Wednesday and Saturday morning markets, which sell the produce of the Périgord — walnuts, foie gras, duck, mushrooms in season, wine, cheese, and the local strawberries in June and July. The Musée du Vin sits on one corner and a string of cafes spreads across the others. In the late afternoon the light slanting between the houses is the best in town.
