Darwin Ecosystème occupies the vast grounds and buildings of the former Caserne Niel, a 19th-century military barracks on the Right Bank of the Garonne. Since 2013 it has been transformed into an alternative complex: organic food market, restaurants, co-working spaces, skate park, street art, climbing walls, and event venues — all housed in industrial brick buildings covered in murals.
Getting here requires crossing the Garonne — the most atmospheric option is the Navette Fluviale river shuttle from the central quays. The food market on weekend mornings draws crowds from across the city, and the overall atmosphere is a deliberate counterpoint to Bordeaux's polished historic centre. Good for an afternoon that also includes a walk along the Right Bank quays.
