L'Entrecôte

Bordeaux's famous steak-only restaurant — one dish, secret sauce, queue out the door

L'Entrecôte is a Bordeaux institution: a restaurant that serves exactly one dish, no choices, no reservations. You arrive, you sit, you get a green salad followed by entrecôte steak with thinly sliced fried potatoes and the establishment's celebrated sauce — a recipe allegedly kept secret for three generations. You can have a second helping of steak. That is the whole menu.

The system sounds absurd; in practice it produces one of the most consistently enjoyable meals in the city. The steak is good, the sauce is very good (buttery, slightly herby, the exact contents debated), and the informality is relaxing. There is usually a queue, especially at weekends — arrive early. This is one of the few places in Bordeaux where a twenty-minute wait feels entirely justified.
