Marché Victor Hugo is the principal covered food market of Bordeaux's city centre, housed in a 1930s market hall on the Place du Docteur Peyrelongue. The ground floor is the market itself: fish, meat, cheese, charcuterie, and vegetables. The upper floor has a ring of restaurants that cook directly from the market stalls below — simple, seasonal, at fair prices.
The upstairs restaurants are a particularly good lunch option: you eat what is fresh that morning, cooked in a deliberately unfussy way, in a room full of Bordeaux's professional and commercial classes. This is the opposite of tourist dining. Expect to queue slightly for a table on weekday lunchtimes.
