Mériadeck

Bordeaux's unloved 1970s administrative quarter — a useful counterpoint to all that 18th-century perfection

Mériadeck is the district directly west of the city hall that was demolished and rebuilt as a modernist administrative quarter in the 1970s. It is largely the opposite of everything that makes Bordeaux beautiful: elevated walkways, brutalist government buildings, an underground shopping centre, and concrete on a substantial scale.

It is worth a look precisely because it is so at odds with its surroundings — Atlas Obscura has included it for exactly this reason. The Bordeaux municipal library, housed here, is architecturally interesting. The ice rink (Patinoire de Mériadeck) is a good option on a cold day. Otherwise this is a district for those who find failed urban modernism as interesting as successful classical urbanism.
