Saint-Pierre is the oldest quarter of Bordeaux, built on the site of the Roman port and layered with every subsequent century. The street grid is tighter and more irregular here than the 18th-century boulevards to the north, and the facades are a mix of medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque. Place du Parlement is the social heart of the neighbourhood — its café terraces are always busy.
The streets of Saint-Pierre are good for wandering without a particular destination. Rue du Parlement Saint-Pierre, Rue Saint-Rémi, and the lanes running down toward the Garonne hold wine bars, cheese shops, boulangeries, and bistros. The neighbourhood is compact enough to cover on foot in an hour but rewarding enough to spend an afternoon.
