Les Arènes

Remains of the Roman amphitheatre, turned into a public garden

What survives of Périgueux's Roman amphitheatre is now a peaceful park ringed by archways and remnants of the tiered seating. The arena once held around 20,000 spectators — large for a provincial town — and was converted into a fortress during the medieval wars before being demolished in the 19th century to lay out the garden you see today.

The walls and a few entrance arches remain, with explanatory panels showing the original plan. It's a good lunch spot, with benches under the chestnut trees and the river Isle a short walk away.
