Pyramid of Couhard

Mysterious Gallo-Roman pyramid above Autun

The Pyramid of Couhard is one of Autun's stranger Roman survivals: a solid stone pyramid rising near the ancient necropolis outside the old city. It probably dates from the 1st century AD, though its exact purpose remains uncertain, which is part of the attraction.

The monument is worth the short climb not only for the archaeology but for the view back over Autun. It makes a good companion to the Roman theatre and city gates, showing how far the ancient town once extended beyond the medieval centre.
