A classic Beaune institution, set in the vaulted stone cellars beneath the old town. The arched ceiling, stone walls, and dimly lit alcoves give it the atmosphere of eating inside a barrel, which is appropriate. The food is solidly Burgundian — coq au vin, andouillette, gougères, and cheese boards that include the local Époisses at various stages of ripening.
It is a better choice for groups than for a quiet dinner for two, as the acoustics are as vaulted as the ceiling. The wine list is competently assembled and covers the main appellations without being adventurous.
