Gorges de Narvau

Just south of the town centre, the Auxois river cuts through a narrow granite gorge before meeting the plateau. The Gorges de Narvau are not dramatic by Alpine standards, but for this rolling agricultural landscape they feel surprisingly wild — steep wooded slopes, mossy outcrops, and the sound of moving water replacing the usual silence of the bocage.

A walking path follows the rim and dips down to the river, linking Lormes' lower streets to the Étang du Goulot. Allow an hour for a comfortable circuit. The gorge is at its best in autumn when the oaks and beeches turn, but the path is walkable year-round.

A story
The Auxois river that carved these gorges once powered a hydroelectric dam at the bottom of town — a concrete dike built in 1897 that controlled the flow for decades before it was finally demolished in 2012, restoring the river to something closer to its natural state.
