Canal du Nivernais

The Canal du Nivernais passes through the valley below the village, linking the Yonne at Auxerre to the Loire watershed in Nivernais. Built in the early 19th century to carry timber and coal, it is now one of France's most popular leisure waterways. The towpath runs flat and surfaced for most of its length, making it ideal for cycling. In summer the canal fills with slow-moving hire boats; in spring and autumn you may have it almost to yourself. Mailly-le-Château is a natural stopping point, with a small port below the cliff.
