The Yonne valley puts several of Burgundy's most worthwhile destinations within easy reach. Vézelay, with its great Romanesque basilica on a hilltop above the vines, is about 50 km south-west and makes an excellent half-day excursion. The Morvan regional park to the south-east is a different landscape entirely — wooded hills, lakes, and the kind of hiking that is impossible in the flat canal valley. Closer to hand, the Caves of Arcy-sur-Cure (about 10 km north-east on the Cure river) contain Palaeolithic cave paintings that predate Lascaux and are open to guided tours in season. Auxerre, the main city of the Yonne, is 25 km north and offers a fine Gothic cathedral, good restaurants, and the best provisioning in the region.
