Hautvillers is itself most often visited as a day trip from Épernay or Reims; from here, the logical day trips are short hops around the Champagne region.
Épernay — 6 km south. The capital of champagne, with the Avenue de Champagne lined by the grand houses: Moët & Chandon, Pol Roger, Perrier-Jouët. The cellar tours here are more elaborate and visitor-focused than the informal tastings of Hautvillers, but complementary. Worth half a day.
Reims — 25 km northeast. The great Gothic cathedral, the coronation church of the kings of France, is reason enough to visit. Reims also has excellent champagne cellars — Taittinger, Pommery, Ruinart — built into Roman chalk tunnels (crayères) beneath the city. A full day.
Montagne de Reims villages — The D26 route through the Montagne de Reims forest and vineyard villages links Hautvillers to Reims via a series of small champagne producers: Ay, Mareuil-sur-Ay, Mutigny. This is one of the best self-guided driving routes in the region and passes through some of the most prized Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in Champagne.
Vallée de la Marne — Driving or cycling along the Marne Canal west from Épernay passes through a sequence of vine-growing villages — Cumières, Damery, Vincelles — with views up to the hillside that include Hautvillers from below. The flat canal towpath is an easy cycling day.
