September and October are the best months to visit Hautvillers. The grape harvest (la vendange) takes place from mid-September through October, and the village is at its most alive: picking crews are in the vineyards, the air carries the smell of fresh-pressed grapes, and several small champagne houses open informally for tastings. The light on the Marne Valley in autumn is exceptional.
Spring (April to June) is the second best season. The vines are leafing out, the weather is mild, and the village is not yet at peak tourist levels. The countryside is green and the walks are pleasant.
Summer (July and August) brings the most visitors, particularly day-trippers from Paris. The village handles the numbers reasonably well — it is small enough that it never feels truly overrun — but accommodation and lunch reservations should be made in advance.
Winter (November to March) is quiet. The vines are bare, many of the small champagne houses are not open for visitors, and the village has little to offer beyond the abbey church. Épernay and Reims, with their grand cellar tours, are a better base in winter.
