Musée de la Castre

Tucked inside the medieval castle at the top of Le Suquet, the Musée de la Castre holds a surprisingly diverse collection accumulated by a 19th-century Dutch baron, Lycklama à Nijeholt, who spent his fortune travelling the world and buying antiquities. The result is an eclectic mix: Mediterranean artifacts from Egypt, Greece, Syria, and Rome; primitive art from Africa, the Americas, and Oceania; and a large collection of musical instruments from around the world.

The castle itself is one of the oldest structures in Cannes, with a 12th-century chapel and the 14th-century Tour du Suquet rising above it. Climb the tower for views over the Croisette and the bay — one of the better vantage points in the city. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday; closed Monday and public holidays.
