American Monument to the Marne

This large memorial on a hill north of Meaux commemorates the American soldiers who fought in the Second Battle of the Marne in 1918 — the engagement that broke the last major German offensive of the war and turned the tide decisively toward Allied victory. The monument, designed by Paul Cret and dedicated in 1932, consists of a tall stone column bearing a winged figure, surrounded by inscribed panels listing the units engaged and the dead. The hilltop site commands a wide view over the Marne valley and the plains where the fighting raged. It is a quiet place, rarely crowded, and the panorama alone is worth the short drive from the city centre. The nearby American military cemetery at Belleau Wood, site of the famous Marine Corps engagement in 1918, is about twenty-five kilometres to the east.
