Meaux's small but enthusiastic cheese museum occupies part of the old market hall near the city centre and covers the full arc of the Brie de Meaux story: the medieval abbeys where the cheese was first recorded, the dairy farms and co-operatives of the Seine-et-Marne, the strict AOC specifications that have governed production since 1980, and the business of ripening and selling the stuff. The exhibits include antique cheese-making tools, ceramic moulds, and historical packaging from local dairies. It is not a large institution, but the guided tour (in French, with English notes available) is given with evident local pride and ends with a tasting. Combined with the Saturday market in the adjacent square, it makes a morning well spent.
