The Musée Crozatier is Le Puy's main civic museum, housed in a nineteenth-century building in the Vinay public gardens. It covers natural history, regional archaeology, decorative arts, and fine art, but the most distinctive section is devoted to dentelle du Puy — the handmade bobbin lace that has been a Le Puy speciality since the sixteenth century and still carries a Geographical Indication designation.
The lace collection includes historic examples as well as contemporary work, and the museum occasionally has demonstrations of the craft. The surrounding gardens are themselves a pleasant place to sit and recover from the hills of the old town. The museum was originally endowed by the sculptor Charles Crozatier and carries his name; his own work is also represented in the collection.
