Cathédrale Saint-Étienne

Toulouse’s unusual cathedral, where mismatched Gothic phases create one of the city’s strangest major churches.

Cathédrale Saint-Étienne is one of Toulouse's most intriguing churches because it never quite resolves into a single plan. Different building campaigns left the nave and choir misaligned, so the interior feels surprising even before you start looking at the stained glass, chapels, and organ case.

It is less immediately famous than Saint-Sernin, but it belongs near the top of a Toulouse church itinerary. The cathedral also anchors the eastern side of the historic centre, making it a natural stop between the old streets, the museums, and the gardens.
