Vernet-les-Bains rewards visitors who slow down. The thermal baths are the traditional reason to come, but the walking and hiking are the real highlight — trails fan out in every direction, from gentle arboretum walks through the town to demanding ascents toward the Canigou summit. The abbey of Saint-Martin-du-Canigou, perched on a rocky ridge an hour's walk above the town, is unmissable.
