Fléville

Small Lorraine commune south of Nancy, defined by the Renaissance Château de Fléville.

Fléville-devant-Nancy is a small commune just south of Nancy, best known for the Château de Fléville — one of the finest Renaissance castles in eastern France. The château has been in private ownership for nearly two centuries and is open to visitors.

The castle's history starts with a 14th-century keep, 30 metres high, which was spared by Cardinal Richelieu at the request of King Louis XIII. The Renaissance wings were completed in 1533, demonstrating early French Renaissance architecture at its most graceful: a 35-metre-long balcony with elegant windows runs the length of the principal facade. The interior includes the grand Estates of Lorraine Room, which tells the history of the Dukes of Lorraine, and several intimate family rooms. Both the castle and the park are listed historic monuments.

Fléville is a short drive from Nancy — about 10 km — and is best visited as an excursion from the city, which offers far more in the way of food, accommodation, and Art Nouveau architecture.

Day Trips

Nancy is the natural base for anyone visiting Fléville. The city is only 10 km north and easily worth a full day: Place Stanislas, one of the finest 18th-century squares in Europe, is the obvious centrepiece, but the Art Nouveau architecture in the streets around it — Nancy was the home of the École de Nancy — is reason enough to linger.

Getting There

Fléville-devant-Nancy is about 10 km south of Nancy city centre. The most practical way to get there is by car — the drive from central Nancy takes around 15 minutes via the D974. There is no direct train service; the nearest station is Nancy, which has fast TGV connections to Paris (about 90 minutes), Strasbourg, and Metz.

If you are arriving without a car, taxis from Nancy are your best option. Local buses connect some villages in the Meurthe-et-Moselle, but connections to Fléville are infrequent and poorly suited to a day visit.
