The Frac Lorraine is a regional contemporary art collection housed in a discreet 18th-century townhouse near Place Saint-Louis. The collection — about 600 works by international contemporary artists — leans towards conceptual and politically engaged work, with rotating exhibitions changing several times a year. It is one of the more challenging modern art spaces in France, and a useful counterpoint to the Pompidou's big-name shows.
Entry is usually free or very inexpensive. The building itself, with its small interior courtyard and beautifully restored salons, is worth a visit in its own right. Closed Mondays.
