Metz is a city of churches and stained glass, and the cathedral is the obvious place to start. From there the centre is small enough to walk in an afternoon — the Place Saint-Louis, the Place de la Comédie, the German-quarter railway station, and the river islands all sit within a few minutes of one another. The Centre Pompidou-Metz, on the eastern edge of the centre, adds a major contemporary art destination to an otherwise medieval city.
