Place Saint-Louis

The Place Saint-Louis is the heart of medieval Metz — a long, triangular square framed by 15th- and 16th-century arcaded houses, their stone columns shaping a pedestrian arcade that runs the length of the square. It was the city's main commercial centre in the Middle Ages, when money changers worked under the arches. Some of the houses still carry small carved figures and dates marking their original owners.

Today it is one of the most pleasant places in the city to sit with a coffee. Cafes and restaurants spill onto the cobbled square, and on summer evenings live music sometimes draws a crowd. The Christmas market that takes over Metz in December — one of the best in France — has its centre here, with wooden chalets running the length of the square.
