The Esplanade garden sits on a promontory above the Moselle with views across the water and a sense of civic pride that Metz wears quietly but consistently. Formal French flowerbeds, fountains, and long tree-lined allées make it the kind of park where people come to stroll slowly, sit on benches, and do very little productively — all highly recommended.
In summer the garden hosts outdoor events and festivals, and the mirabelle plum — the golden symbol of Lorraine — features heavily in the city's annual celebrations held here in August. The park is immaculately kept and genuinely beautiful in bloom.
It's an easy five-minute walk from the cathedral, and a good place to decompress between museum visits. If you're in Metz on a warm evening, the Esplanade at dusk, with the light fading over the Moselle, is one of the city's quiet pleasures.
