Vimy Ridge Memorial

Haunting WWI memorial with preserved trenches on the ridge

The most significant First World War memorial in the area, about 10 km north of Arras. The Canadian National Vimy Memorial stands on the highest point of the ridge, surrounded by preserved trenches and shell craters that have been left largely undisturbed since 1918. The landscape itself tells the story: pockmarked earth, chalky soil, a strange silence. Entry and parking are free. The visitor centre has a well-done exhibition on the battle and its significance.

A story
The two white pylons of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial represent Canada and France. The Battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917 was the first time all four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought together — the victory is often described as a turning point in Canada's sense of itself as a nation distinct from Britain.
