Lille has an automatic metro (VAL system) with two lines that connect the two TGV stations, the city centre, the university campus, and the suburbs. A tram line runs east from Gare Lille-Flandres through the city. Surface buses cover the rest. The metro runs late (until 00:30, later on weekends) and is efficient. A single ticket covers all modes for 1 hour.
Vieux-Lille is entirely walkable and best explored on foot — no vehicle can reach most of the lanes. The central axis from the Grand'Place to the Palais des Beaux-Arts is 600 metres; from the Grand'Place to the Citadelle is about 1.5 kilometres. Most visitors who are based in the centre will walk everywhere they need to go during the day and use the metro for longer trips to Wazemmes or the universities.
Vélo'v bike-sharing stations are scattered throughout the central arrondissement. A day pass is inexpensive and works well for longer trips where the metro is not direct.
