Lille's position makes it one of the best bases for day trips in north-western Europe. Brussels is 35 minutes by TGV — close enough to arrive for coffee and return for dinner. Ghent and Bruges are both reachable in under an hour by train via Brussels or via the Belgian border. The battlefields and cemeteries of the First World War Ypres Salient are 45 minutes by car, with the In Flanders Fields Museum in Ypres providing essential context. Roubaix and Tourcoing, functionally extensions of the Lille metropolitan area, have their own points of interest: Roubaix has an excellent art museum (La Piscine, housed in an Art Deco swimming pool) and a good textile museum.
