When to Go

Brest is the wettest city in France by some measures — it sits directly on the Atlantic and receives the full force of frontal weather systems coming in from the west. Rain is possible in any month, and the wind is a constant presence. That said, the summers are mild (rarely exceeding 22–24°C), the winters are maritime and not very cold, and the dramatic skies and light that accompany the constant weather changes are part of what makes the Breton coast so distinctive.

July and August are the warmest and driest months, and when the sun does come out the Rade de Brest and the Presqu'île de Crozon are among the most beautiful coastlines in Europe. The Brest International Maritime Festival (Fêtes Maritimes) is held every four years (most recently in 2024) and draws tall ships from around the world — the largest maritime gathering in Europe when it runs.
