Ile de Versailles is a small artificial island on the Erdre, turned into a Japanese-style garden with rockwork, water, clipped planting, and wooden buildings. It is close to the centre of Nantes, but the river setting makes it feel like a deliberate pause in the city.
The island works well as part of a slow walk north from the old centre, or as a starting point for getting onto the Erdre by boat or canoe in season. The Maison de l'Erdre adds exhibitions about the river, but the main reason to come is simpler: a quiet garden, reflections, and a different register from Nantes' industrial and surrealist set pieces.
