Old Town (Vieux Quimper)

The medieval centre of Quimper is one of the best-preserved in western France. The streets around Rue Kéréon, Rue des Boucheries, and the riverbank are lined with half-timbered houses dating from the 14th to 17th centuries — many of them leaning slightly toward the street above their ground floors, which gives the quarter its character.

The two rivers, the Odet and the Steir, flow through the centre and meet just south of the cathedral. Walking along the quays on a summer evening, with the spires above and the old houses reflected in the water, is one of the better experiences Brittany offers. The Saturday market on the Place Saint-Corentin is the social hub of the week — arrive early for the best cheese and crêpe fillings.
