Atelier Cezanne

Cezanne's preserved hilltop studio with his original tools

Address 9 Avenue Paul Cezanne, 13090 Aix-en-Provence

The studio where Paul Cezanne worked during the last years of his life, preserved much as he left it. His easel, palette, and personal objects remain in place. The light that drew him to this hillside spot above Aix still pours through the large north-facing window — Cezanne designed the building himself in 1901 and ordered a slot cut into the wall so that he could carry his large canvases out into the garden.

The hill above gives the famous view across to Mont Sainte-Victoire. Walking up to the atelier from the centre takes about twenty minutes through quiet residential streets; do it in the late afternoon when the Provencal light is at its softest. Tickets are timed and the rooms are small, so book ahead in summer. Closed Sundays in winter.

A story
When Cezanne died in 1906 his son sold the house and its contents — and the entire studio, with the painter's easel, palette, smock, and the still-life objects he kept for setting up compositions, has been left as it was the day he last worked here.
