A short pedestrian street running from Place de la République towards the theatre, Rue Caristie preserves a stretch of restored 17th and 18th-century stone facades — wrought-iron balconies, mullioned windows, and worn limestone door surrounds. The street name refers to the Roman Carusa gens, who had a villa here.
There are a couple of independent shops, an antiquarian bookshop, and a wine bar tucked into the ground floors. Halfway along, an arched passage opens into a hidden courtyard with a fountain — typical of the small architectural surprises in this part of the old town.
