Ancienne Synagogue

Trace of Orange's medieval Jewish community

A small plaque on Rue de Tourre marks the site of Orange's medieval synagogue. Like Avignon and Carpentras, Orange had a "carrière" — a Jewish quarter — under papal and then Protestant protection, when Jewish communities were expelled from the rest of France. After the principality was annexed by Louis XIV in 1673, that protection ended, and the community gradually moved on or assimilated.

The street layout of the old quarter is preserved, with narrow alleys and tall tenement houses arranged around a central well. The synagogue building itself is gone, but the area gives a sense of how the community lived. A discreet panel from the municipal heritage trail explains the history.
