Chacha Tower

Brick clock tower that dispenses free chacha — Georgia's strong grape brandy — on schedule

The Chacha Tower (Chacha Kosht'i) is a brick clock tower on Era Square, opposite the cathedral. It was built in 2012 in an Italianate style — narrow, tall, with arched balconies and a clock face — to anchor the new corner of the city. The novelty is what it does on schedule: taps at the foot of the tower pour out free chacha, Georgia's strong fruit brandy, for fifteen minutes once a week.

The schedule is announced locally and is enforced. Even when the chacha is not running, the small square around the tower is a pleasant stop with fountains and a few benches.

A story
Once a week (on a published schedule), taps embedded in the base of the tower run not water but chacha — the local fruit brandy. Bring a small cup. The schedule is enforced strictly; outside those hours the tower is purely decorative.
