The Church of the Holy Spirit is the only Roman Catholic church in Batumi — a small but pretty building on a quiet street east of Europe Square. Catholic worship in the city dates to the same nineteenth-century influx of merchants and engineers that built the synagogue and the cathedral, although the original Catholic church (designed by the Polish architect Marfeld) was destroyed in the Soviet era.
The current building is a 1990s replacement. Services are held in Georgian, Russian, and occasionally Polish; the small congregation includes a number of long-resident Polish nuns. Visitors are welcome outside service times.
