Day Trips

Tbilisi is central enough in Georgia to make most of the country's set pieces reachable in a day. The ancient capital of Mtskheta (UNESCO-listed, with the Jvari Monastery above and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral below) is 20 km north and easily done in half a day. Kakheti wine country to the east — Sighnaghi, Telavi, and the monasteries around them — makes a longer day or an overnight. Uplistsikhe, the rock-cut city near Gori, is 90 km west. For mountains, the Georgian Military Highway leads north to Gudauri and Kazbegi.
