Freedom Square

Central square anchored by a golden Freedom Monument

Freedom Square anchors the eastern end of Rustaveli Avenue and serves as the main meeting point of central Tbilisi. The square is dominated by a tall column topped by a golden statue of Saint George — the Freedom Monument, installed in 2006. Below ground is a large metro station; above, the square is surrounded by banks, hotels, and the city hall building.

The square itself is not especially beautiful, but it is central to everything. All the main attractions of the old town and Rustaveli Avenue are within easy walking distance. The glass-and-steel Radisson hotel on the north side contrasts with the older buildings around it; the city assembly building to the south, with its clock tower, is more interesting architecturally.

A story
Freedom Square has been renamed many times — it was Erivan Square under the tsars, then Lenin Square under the Soviets, with a giant Lenin statue that dominated it until 1991. The current Freedom Monument, a tall column topped by a golden Saint George slaying a dragon, was installed in 2006 at the initiative of President Saakashvili. The 1907 Tiflis bank robbery — organised by Stalin and executed by his fellow Bolsheviks, killing forty people — took place in this square.
