The Atlantik has been a fixture of Freiburg's alternative scene since 1976. By day it functions as a regular café with strong coffee, soup, and salads; by night it becomes a small concert venue for indie bands, singer-songwriters, jazz, and political talks. The crowd skews left and academic — university lecturers and long-time activists mix with students.
The interior is wood-panelled and book-lined, with old posters from forty years of gigs and political campaigns. Prices are moderate. It is on Schwabentorring just inside the Schwabentor and stays open late by Freiburg standards.
