One of the stronger art museums in southwestern Germany, with a permanent collection focused on 19th- and early 20th-century German and French painting and sculpture. The Impressionist and Expressionist holdings are particularly good — Manet, Cézanne, Kirchner, Beckmann. The building itself is a Jugendstil landmark, redesigned and extended in 2018 with a new wing that added substantially to the gallery space.
The contemporary program is ambitious and worth checking before you visit. The museum's location on Friedrichsplatz, alongside the Art Nouveau water tower, makes this one of the more photogenic corners of the city.
