Steinsberg Castle

Steinsberg sits on a wooded hilltop above the village of Weiler, about six kilometres south of Sinsheim. The 31-metre pentagonal keep — unusual for German castle architecture — has been standing since the late twelfth century and is open for a steep climb up wooden stairs to a viewing platform.

From the top, the whole Kraichgau spreads out: vineyards, the Black Forest on a clear day, and the high-rise outline of Heidelberg to the north. The castle courtyard has a restaurant in the old keep buildings, popular with cyclists on the Kraichgau wine route.

A story
Locals call Steinsberg the "compass of the Kraichgau" because its pentagonal keep is visible for miles in every direction. The Zähringer dukes built it in the twelfth century on a 333-metre volcanic cone; the five-sided tower is one of only a handful in Germany and was designed to deflect siege projectiles rather than absorb them.
