Sinsheim

Kraichgau town best known for a Technik Museum displaying Concorde and Tu-144 aircraft.

Sinsheim is a small town in the Kraichgau hills between Heidelberg and Heilbronn, visited almost exclusively for one thing: the Technik Museum. The collection of cars, motorcycles, and military vehicles is vast, but what makes it unmissable are the two full-sized aircraft mounted on the roof — a Concorde and a Tupolev Tu-144, the only place in the world where you can walk through both supersonic airliners side by side.

The museum sprawls across several hangars and includes Formula 1 cars, vintage aircraft, locomotives, and a submarine. It is an enthusiast's paradise and easily worth half a day.

The town itself is unremarkable, but the surrounding Kraichgau is pleasant wine and cycling country, with Steinsberg Castle — the pentagonal "compass of the Kraichgau" — visible for miles. Football fans can catch a Bundesliga match at the nearby PreZero Arena, home of TSG Hoffenheim. Heidelberg is just half an hour away by train.

Day Trips

Sinsheim is best treated as a day trip itself, from Heidelberg or Heilbronn. If you are based here, Heidelberg (half an hour by train) is the obvious add-on, and Speyer combines neatly with the Technik Museum's sister site — the Technik Museum Speyer has the Buran shuttle and a walk-through 747.

Getting There

Sinsheim sits on the S-Bahn Rhein-Neckar S5 line. Trains run two to three times an hour from Heidelberg (around 30 minutes) and Heilbronn (around 40 minutes); both cities have ICE connections to Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Karlsruhe. Get off at Sinsheim Museum/Arena for the Technik Museum and stadium — it is right next to the entrance. Sinsheim (Elsenz) Hbf is the stop for the town centre.

By car, take the A6 motorway (exits 33 Sinsheim or 32 Sinsheim-Süd). The museum has a huge free car park. Frankfurt Airport is around 90 minutes north; Stuttgart Airport around 60 minutes south.
