Technik Museum Sinsheim

The Auto & Technik Museum is one of Europe's great transport collections and the only reason most people come to Sinsheim. The roof carries the headline act: a Tupolev Tu-144 and a Concorde mounted nose-up at takeoff angle, with staircases inside both so you can walk the cabins. They are the only two supersonic airliners ever to enter passenger service, and this is the only place in the world where they sit side by side.

Inside the hangars, the inventory is enormous. Formula 1 cars include machines driven by Niki Lauda and Michael Schumacher; the American collection runs from Cadillacs to Peterbilt trucks; the military section has Soviet tanks, a Mig-21, a Phantom F-4, and an entire U-boat conning tower. There are vintage motorcycles, steam locomotives, fairground organs that still play, and a recreated 1950s American street. An IMAX cinema sits alongside.

Plan on three to four hours. The sister museum at Speyer, half an hour away, holds the Buran Soviet space shuttle and a Boeing 747 you can walk inside — a combination ticket covers both.

A story
The Tupolev Tu-144 on the roof was the world's first supersonic airliner to fly, beating Concorde into the air by two months in December 1968. It was retired after just 55 commercial flights; Sinsheim bought one of the survivors in 2001 and trucked it across Europe before lifting it onto the museum's roof beside a real Air France Concorde.
