Walhalla Memorial

Neoclassical hilltop hall above the Danube, filled with busts of German-speaking figures

The Walhalla Memorial rises above the Danube east of Regensburg like a Greek temple transplanted to Bavaria. Commissioned by King Ludwig I, it was built to honour prominent figures from German-speaking history, whose busts and plaques line the marble interior.

The view is half the reason to go. From the steps you look over the river, vineyards, and low hills, and the approach by boat or bus from Regensburg turns it into an easy half-day excursion rather than just another monument on a list.
